Zechariah's prophesy

I'd like to share with you another Bible reading about the real peace God brings to us, as we talked about in last Sunday's sermon.

In the Old Testament reading for this coming Sunday (July 5th), God speaks to us through an Old Testament prophet, Zechariah.  The verses below were most likely written while God's people were held captive in Babylon during the 6th century B.C.  In these verses, God was telling His children all about the real peace He will bring to the entire world.

Zechariah 9:9–12
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
     Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
     righteous and having salvation is He,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
     on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
     and the war horse from Jerusalem;
and the battle bow shall be cut off,
     and He shall speak peace to the nations;
His rule shall be from sea to sea,
     and from the River to the ends of the earth.
As for you also, because of the blood of My covenant with you,
     I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.
Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope;
     today I declare that I will restore to you double.

In the first verse,  He proclaims "your king is coming to you"!  And how?  He comes bringing salvation and in humility, riding a donkey.  Some of the folks in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday must have really gotten it; the long-promised Messiah had arrived!   But the Messiah would not bring the "false peace" of nations and men.  No chariots, no war horses, no battle bows.  The Messiah, Jesus Christ came to speak real peace "to the ends of the earth", which lasts forever.  And what gives this real peace?  God's "salvation", "the blood of [His] covenant with you".  His real peace "will set...prisoners free" from satan and hell.  This promise, this real peace is for you and for me, "O prisoners of hope"!

As we live surrounded by this world's false peace, remember these words of God through Zechariah.  Jesus Christ has set you free from sin, by shedding His blood on Calvary's cross!  This is real peace, which is for ALL people and will last through ALL time!  Thanks be to God!

A prisoner of hope with you,
Vicar Mark

Invocation
V:  In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
C:  AMEN

Opening Song:     Alive In Us

Call to Worship      from Psalm 119
V:  Look on my affliction and deliver me,
C:  for I do not forget your law.
V:  Plead my cause and redeem me;
C:  give me life according to your promise!
V:  Salvation is far from the wicked,
C:  for they do not seek your statutes.
V:  Great is your mercy, O Lord;
C:  give me life according to your rules.
V:  The sum of your word is truth,
C:  and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.

Confession and Absolution
V:  We’ll hear later in our Epistle lesson, how God’s law no longer holds us captive because Jesus Christ has fulfilled the law in our place.  And God’s laws are still good and perfect, given in love for our benefit.  But the devil, the world, and our sinful natures screw things up.   They cause us to sin against God’s good and perfect law.  So again today, we come before our loving God to confess our own sins   and  plead for His mercy.
Silent confession of your sins
V:  We also confess together:
C:  Heavenly Father, in our thoughts, words and actions, we have sinned against You, against each other and against others we don’t even know.  For the sake of Jesus, Your Son and our Savior, forgive our sins, and create new hearts in us, better able to serve and love our neighbors.
V:  Because Jesus Christ allowed Himself to be sacrificed for you, the perfect Lamb without sin, taking your punishment the law requires.    By His grace, you belong to Him!  Be free, free from sin’s control,  free from all guilt, free to bear fruit for your neighbor, to God’s glory!  You are forgiven & freed, in the Name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen.

Old Testament Reading              Jeremiah 28:5-9
Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Hananiah the prophet in the presence of the priests  and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord, and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen!  May the Lord do so; may the Lord make the words that you have prophesied come true, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles.  Yet hear now this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people.  The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms.  As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to pass, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.”
V:    This is the Word of the Lord.
C:    Thanks be to God.

Epistle Reading                               Romans 7:1-13
    Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives?  For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.  Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive.  But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man, she is not an adulteress.
    Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God.  For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death.  But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.
    What then shall we say?  That the law is sin?  By no means!  Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin.  For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”  But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead.  I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died.  The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me.  For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.  So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
    Did that which is good, then, bring death to me?  By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.
V:    This is the Word of the Lord.
C:    Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel                                       Matthew 10:34-42
V:    The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 10th chapter.
C:    Glory to You, O Lord.
          Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth.  I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.  For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.  And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household.   Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.  And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.  Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
         Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.  The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward.  And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”
V:    This is the Word of the Lord.
C:    Praise to You, O Christ.

The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried.  And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.  And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

"Our Comfort Amid Riots"

For the last few Sundays in our sermons we have been talking about how we should react and do and treat others in light of the riots and turmoil around us.  We know that we can confront all things, even evil and terrible things, by the strength and grace of God, through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Here is a powerful article from some brothers, which puts riots and the devil's work in eternal perspective.  I commend this reading to you; fear not!

Call to Worship                Psalm 91:1-6
V:   He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
C:  will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
V:   I will say to the Lord,
C:  “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Confession and Absolution

V: We come before the Lord today to be strengthened in faith and to be witnesses of
     righteousness and truth before a hostile world.  Let us first confess our own sinfulness,
     that we receive mercy, grace, and forgiveness from God.

Old Testament Reading      Jeremiah 20:7-13

O LORD, You have deceived me, and I was deceived;
     You are stronger than I, and you have prevailed.
I have become a laughingstock all the day; everyone mocks me.
For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout, “Violence and destruction!”
For the word of the LORD has become for me a reproach and derision all day long.
If I say, “I will not mention Him, or speak any more in His name,”
     there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones,
         and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.
For I hear many whispering.  Terror is on every side!
“Denounce him!  Let us denounce him!” say all my close friends, watching for my fall.
“Perhaps he will be deceived; then we can overcome him and take our revenge on him.”
But the LORD is with me as a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble;
     they will not overcome me.  They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed.
         Their eternal dishonor will never be forgotten.
O LORD of hosts, who tests the righteous, who sees the heart and the mind,
     let me see Your vengeance upon them, for to You have I committed my cause.
Sing to the LORD; praise the LORD!
     For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hand of evildoers.
V:   This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanksbe to God.

Epistle Reading                   Romans 12:1-21
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.  Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.  For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.  Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
Let love be genuine.  Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.  Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.  Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.  Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.  Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.  Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.  Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight.  Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.  If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.  Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”  To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”  Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
V:   This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans,
Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake.  But the one who endures to the end will be saved.  When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.  It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master.  If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.
“So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.  What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops.  And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.  Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.  Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?  And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.  But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.  Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.  So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.
V:  This is the Word of the Lord.

      Serve the Lord with gladness!
C:  Come into His presence with singing!

C:  It is He who made us, and we are His;

C:  and His courts with praise!
V:  Give thanks to Him;
C:  bless His name!
V:  For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever,
C:  and His faithfulness to all generations.

Confession and Absolution
V:  Individually, lets confess our sins to God our Heavenly Father.
Silent confession of your sins
V:  Together, we confess our sins…
C:  Heavenly Father, You have heard our private confessions, now hear us as we pray together.  We have sinned against You and each other in so many ways.  For the sake of Jesus who took our punishment, forgive us, and change us, so we follow Your will in our lives.
V:  Through His Son Jesus Christ, God has extended His steadfast love to us,   that while we are still sinners, Christ died for us!   Receive “the free gift of grace” given by “that one man, Jesus Christ”.  Your sins are forgiven, in the Name of the Father and of the  Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C:  Amen.

Old Testament Reading              Exodus 19:2-8
They set out from Rephidim and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and they encamped in the wilderness.  There Israel encamped before the mountain, while Moses went up to God.  The Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.  Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”
So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him.  All the people answered together and said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do.”  And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.
V:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle Reading                               Romans 5:6-15
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.  For one will scarcely die for a righteous person - though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die - but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.  For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.  More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law.  Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.
But the free gift is not like the trespass.  For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.
V:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel                                       Matthew 9:35 – 10:13
V:  The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 9th & 10th chapters.
C:  Glory to You, O Lord.
 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.  Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
And He called to Him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.  The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.  And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’  Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.
As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.
And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples.  And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”  But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.  Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
V:  This is the Word of the Lord.
C:  Praise to You, O Christ.
